Health insurance in Indiana at a glance
Indiana uses HealthCare.gov for ACA plans. Hollen works with Ambetter and Anthem for Indiana individual and family health coverage, plus vision carriers. Indiana covers expansion adults through the Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP), so very low-income applicants are usually directed there rather than to a Marketplace plan.
Where Indiana residents enroll
Indiana residents shop for ACA plans through HealthCare.gov. You can apply on your own, or have Hollen help you apply and compare plans at no extra cost.
For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Choose a plan by December 15, 2026 for coverage that starts January 1; plans chosen December 16 through January 15 generally start February 1. Outside Open Enrollment, you generally need a Special Enrollment Period, usually 60 days after a qualifying life event such as moving to Indiana, losing other coverage, getting married, or having a baby.
Medicaid in Indiana
Indiana has adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion, with expanded coverage starting February 1, 2015. Adults ages 19 to 64 with income up to 138% of the federal poverty level may qualify through Indiana Medicaid, including the Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP). Indiana also has a state “trigger law” that could end or change expansion coverage if federal funding for it is reduced. Under a 2025 federal law, many expansion adults will need to meet work or community engagement requirements beginning January 1, 2027, unless they qualify for an exemption, so watch for notices from the state.
Indiana's Medicaid program: Indiana Medicaid, including the Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP). Medicaid and CHIP accept applications year-round, and the Marketplace application will tell you if anyone in your household may qualify.
What affects plan prices in Indiana
ACA premiums in Indiana depend on your age, your county and ZIP code, tobacco use, who is on the plan, and the metal level you choose. Your health history doesn't affect the price. Marketplace savings depend on household income and size. The carriers available to you can vary from county to county, so the first step is always checking plans for your exact ZIP code.
