Individual and family health insurance is coverage you buy for yourself and your household instead of getting it through an employer. Plans that meet Affordable Care Act standards cover the essential health benefits, can't turn you down or charge more for a pre-existing condition, and cap your yearly in-network out-of-pocket costs.
You can buy these plans through the Health Insurance Marketplace, where you may qualify for a premium tax credit based on household income, or directly from a carrier. For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027; choose a plan by December 15 for coverage starting January 1. After that, you generally need a qualifying life event to enroll.
Dental, vision, and life insurance round out a household's protection. Hollen compares options from multiple carriers in each category and can quote several types of coverage together.
