What it is
Accident insurance pays set or scheduled benefits for care related to a covered accidental injury: emergency room visits, X-rays, fractures, dislocations, follow-up care, and similar services, depending on the plan. Some plans reimburse accident-related medical expenses up to a maximum instead of paying a fixed schedule.
Many accident plans include an accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) benefit, and some include or offer riders for things like critical illness or disability income. Riders add cost, and what's available varies by carrier and state.
Benefits are paid even if your health plan pays too, so the money can help with a deductible, coinsurance, or the everyday costs of recovering.
Who it's often a fit for
- Active families with kids in sports
- People with physical jobs or hobbies
- Anyone with a high deductible who wants help with accident costs
- People who want to add a low-cost layer to a short term or ACA plan
How it works
- Choose a benefit level and any optional riders.
- After a covered accident, get care from any provider.
- Submit a claim with the required documents.
- The plan pays its scheduled or reimbursement amount, up to its limits.

Carriers you can quote online
Online quotes for accident insurance are available from UnitedHealthcare, Pivot Health, and Allstate. Hollen can line them up side by side and explain the differences, and plan availability varies by state.
What affects the cost
There's no single price. These factors usually matter most:
- The benefit level
- Who is covered
- Optional riders
- Your state
- Your age, on some plans
Limits to understand
- It only covers accidents, not illnesses (unless a rider adds coverage).
- Benefits are limited and capped.
- Some injuries or activities are excluded.
- Rider availability varies by state.
How Hollen helps

She'll help you decide whether a supplemental plan makes sense alongside your main coverage, check what's offered in your state, and explain the fine print before you buy. You can enroll online yourself or have Hollen walk you through it.
Frequently asked questions
Does accident insurance cover illness?
No. It covers accidental injuries. Some plans offer optional riders, such as critical illness, that add limited illness benefits.
Will it pay if my health insurance pays?
Yes. Accident benefits are generally paid regardless of other coverage.
What riders are available?
Depending on the carrier and state, riders may include critical illness, accidental death, or disability income. Hollen can show you what's offered where you live.
Is there a waiting period?
Accident coverage often starts quickly, but check the plan for its effective date and any waiting periods on riders.
Can I keep my doctor?
Yes. Accident benefits aren't tied to a network.
